System of Belt Rank
The promotional scale of Taekwon-Do consists of 19 ranks - 10 grades (Gups) and 9 degrees (Dans). The grades, represented by coloured belts, start with 10th grade (Gup) and end with 1st grade. Degrees, or level of black belt, begin at 1st degree (Dan) and end at the ultimate 9th degree.
